Description
Is your class ready to solve a mathematical mystery and escape the room?
In this activity students in groups of size 3-6 will work together to try and ‘escape’ the room. To do this they will solve a series of mathematical clues that will give them a 4 digit code. Once they have this they can enter the code on the interactive PowerPoint slideshow to see if they have managed to escape...
This is a fun and exciting way to review math topics, suitable for Grades 4, 5, 6 and 7.
Your students will be presented with a story set up and a floor plan of the room. They will then need to explore the classroom to find, and solve, the 5 clues that you will have printed out and placed around the room prior to the lesson.
The 5 clues between them review topics from 5 key Common Core State Standards (CCSS) areas for these grades: Operations & Algebraic Thinking, Number & Operations in Base 10, Fractions, Measurement & Data and Geometry.
Each of the 5 clues come in two different levels: Level 1 and Level 2. Before the lesson select the most appropriate level for your class and print the clues corresponding to that level. Level 1 clues require math knowledge that, when following the CCSS guidelines, should be accessible to Grade 4 students and above, and Level 2 clues require math that should be accessible to Grade 6 students and above. However, this is very flexible and you can even mix and match the clues between the levels (e.g. you can print three of the clues as Level 1 and two as Level 2) to best suit the needs of your students. Further guidance on this is provided in the download.
Download includes:
- 5 clues reviewing key math topics and concepts from Grades 4-7. Each clue is provided in two different levels of difficulty.
- A floor plan of the room (one floor plan is printed for each group of students, and they will use this to make notes on and keep track of the clues they have solved)
- Complementary slideshow to set the scene at the beginning of the activity and to reveal the solution at the end. The slideshow includes an interactive code checker that students can use to check their answer at the end of the lesson.
- Set up instructions
- Answer key with solutions for each clue
Certain to create a fun, unique and engaging lesson!
