Mastering the Genders of German Nouns

The task of having to memorize German words and their articles "der, die, das" ist a giant hurdle for a lot of learners trying to master the German language!

Many so-called rules for determining the gender of German words have too many exceptions. For example, some say that "all words ending in -e are feminine", and "all words ending in -er" are masculine, but that's not quite true, is it? What about "die Butter" and "der Käse"?

So what's a learner to do? :)

Luckily, you CAN determine the article of a lot of words by looking at the suffix. For example, words with suffixes -ung, -heit- and -keit have the feminine article "die". There are also certain categories that systematically use the same gender. For example, did you know that all months are masculine?
