Description

This is a companion pack for middle-schoolers who are viewing the documentary “A Schoolgirl's Odyssey: The Malala Yousafzai Story”.

This pack includes a Cornell / Focus Notes sheet with guided questions, a vocabulary acquisition worksheet with 9 words exclusive to the documentary that students may or may not know, and a Reflection and Understanding Sheet.

My students learned about bold actions and students are to answer the essential question: Are bold actions worth the risk? I felt that the Malala Yousafzai story was an excellent example of bold actions.

I used the documentary to introduce the book "I am Malala" to my 7th grade class, but the documentary could be used in conjunction with a novel unit study or read-aloud as well. Links to the documentary and supplementary videos about Malala Yousafzai can be found on the last page of the pack. My class viewed the documentary and completed the Cornell Notes and the vocabulary sheet (English and Spanish), then they viewed the additional videos in the order listed and then worked on the reflection and understanding sheet. They enjoyed learning about Malala Yousafzai and were inspired by her bravery and determination.

I turned on the Spanish subtitles for my Spanish speaking students to encourage their participation as well. All students enjoyed this mini-lesson to introduce the book.
