How to use these Making Predictions Activities:

This lesson teaches students how to make predictions and explores the factors that shape the predictions made while reading or observing texts. Students will identify how culture, experiences, and context influence their predictions. They will also practice making predictions through the use of an anticipation guide, which will guide them through the process of evaluating their background knowledge.

You can begin this lesson with the Making Predictions Slideshow Lesson.  This lesson is formatted for both Microsoft PowerPoint® and Google Slides®.  Students will practice making predictions about a series of images. They will then examine the ways in which text features and background knowledge influence these predictions. To practice making predictions, students will also view a film adaptation of “Lather and Nothing Else.”

As you work through the lesson with your students, they can fill out the corresponding Making Predictions Guided Note.  This graphic organizer prompts students to make note of their answers to the question prompts within the slideshow lesson.

Students will then complete a guided reading of an Informational Pamphlet about Substance Misuse. They will fill out an Anticipation Guide using the worksheets provided; this pre-reading activity evaluates students’ background knowledge and prompts them to make predictions about the topic of substance misuse. They will then complete a series of post-reading questions to compare their predictions to their answers after reading the information article.

To consolidate this activity, a detailed answer key has been provided.
