What educators are saying

So helpful when determining the difference between main idea and theme! Students often have trouble with this concept, and this activity was helpful in deciphering that difference.
I used these with a student I was tutoring online. They were an engaging way to teach main idea vs theme!

Description

Main Idea and Theme are tricky topics that your students can MASTER with this resource! Engage your students in understanding the difference between the main idea of a story and the theme of a story with these 16 unique, DIFFERENTIATED task cards that are printable and digital.

*This is the original Main Idea vs. Theme resource!*

The cards include 16 original stories. Set #1 includes a prompt card encouraging students to see the difference between main idea and theme as well as 16 half page cards. Set #2 includes the same 16 stories with 3 options, one is the theme, one is the main idea, and one is simply an event from the story. The students use the multiple choice options to determine the main idea and theme of the passage.

You can also use these task cards and passages to simply teach theme or main idea, independent of one another.

An answer key, with SUGGESTED answers, is included. Note that students can come up with a variety of different themes and main ideas, and the answers I give are SUGGESTIONS only. They may vary!

Recording sheets are also included.

NOW INCLUDES FIVE DIGITAL VERSION OPTIONS to use in Google Classroom, including a NEW version that contains a FULL PAGE text option for easy reading.

These cards are perfect for morning work, centers, whole class work, small group work, early finishers, enrichment, remediation, etc.
