Rationale

Not only are educators concerned about a student’s ability to identify main idea because it is a common core standard, but also because main idea is critical to the understanding of texts that give the student information. Being able to identify the main idea and the supporting details in exercises and activities will give students skills to understand the message of the text and skills that can be applied to their own writing as well.

The passages are mini lessons on animals that students may have have seen in zoos, books or the Animal Channel. Additionally, challenging vocabulary is used within each passage and a vocabulary listing is included in this packet to help students when reading. The “#” on the vocabulary sheet corresponds to the number of the passage in which the word is found.

The goals are:

- student practice in identifying the main idea

- student practice in identifying the supporting ideas and facts

- present information that might be new to the student

- pique the student’s curiosity to learn more about the subject or similar subjects

- present information or ideas that would transfer to the student’s own writings
