What educators are saying

My student and I had a great time playing this game! The only downside I found was that if you use it too much/too often, then it becomes too easy. Maybe use only certain pairs each time and rotate them in/out. I would still highly recommend this resource and would buy it again!
My students used this resource as a learning center for literacy. It also satisfied the technology piece. It was engaging and gave the students practice with the skill.

Learning Objective

Students can match three supporting detail statements to a main idea statement.

Description

This is a hands-on game your students can play if they would benefit from matching a main idea statement to its supporting details.

This engaging, educational game includes 36 game pieces (18 matches) and directions! Simply print and cut the game pieces (1 set for each pair or small group). Students turn all of the game pieces over, and then follow the directions to play Concentration!

Each topic has three matches. For example, these are the matches for the eye cards:

1. Main Idea- There are three areas on the surface of the eye.

matches

Supporting details- sclera (white part), iris (colored part) pupils (black part)

2. Main Idea- Some people suffer from certain eye conditions.

matches

Supporting Details: Nearsighted, Farsighted, Stigma

3. Main Idea- There are various ways to improve a person’s sight.

matches

Supporting Details- Glasses, Contacts, Eye surgery

It comes in two formats: print and digital. Choose the format that is best for your students!

  1. Teachers who choose the traditional print format will print a set of cards for each small group. Students will cut apart the cards, turn them facedown, and then take turns trying to uncover matches. When all of the cards have been matched, students count their cards to determine the winner. (I have included a set of cards that contain clip art and a set of cards where the clip art images are removed from each card.)
  2. The newer digital format is an Easel Activity. It is set up to be a game that students can play individually or with a partner. Students are presented with three details, and they must uncover the card that contains the main idea statement that matches the details.

CHECK OUT THE PREVIEW to view both versions! It also includes an instructions page and answer key.

If you would like to explore how the digital version of this activity is played, I invite you to check out one of these free contraction concentration games: Basic Contractions Memory and Advanced Contractions Memory. (Just click on the links.)
