Description

Teaching students to identify the main idea of a text becomes an enjoyable experience when you teach them to identify different types of details. Details support main ideas but never are the main ideas themselves. When students can identify the types of details they encounter, they will be able to more easily identify the main idea, especially when the main idea is implied and not directly stated. Answering the question, “What do the details add up to to create the main idea?” will be more easily answered when your students correctly identify the supporting details of a text.
