What educators are saying

I used this with my EL middle school students. They finished their EL test in March and I'm now reviewing concepts they have covered in their ELA classes. Main Idea/Details is something the ELA teachers asked me to reinforce before testing, so this was quite helpful.

This is a 26 page common core-aligned unit that focuses on the critical thinking skill, main idea. It is nonfiction and ocean themed with high interest topics for 4-6th grades.

Common Core Standard:English Language Arts Standards: Reading: Informational Text : Grade 5 Determine two or more main ideas of a text and explain how they are supported by key details; summarize the text.

The first part of this lesson is a shared/guided reading lesson. It is 5 nonfiction passages with guided learning. The second part of this lesson is a literacy center. There are 5 task cards with main idea questions that go with each task card.

Two different answer sheets are included. There is also an answer key for the shared/guided reading lessons and the literacy center. Also, there is a rubric.

There are many different ways to use this unit. You could use it for guided reading, interventions, literacy center, whole class learning, or you could even give it to an aide or parent volunteer to do with a small group. The possibilities are endless! I included directions on how I use it in my 5th grade classroom.
