What educators are saying

Great visual chart! The kids really like this to reinforce spelling patterns and understanding the sounds.

Description

UPDATED ON 1/13/20 to include cuter clipart and color versions!

I have created long vowel charts to use as guides when writing, spelling, and reading. I tell the kids that when the vowel "says its name"...we have to do something special! The patterns found on these charts are the "special" things that we have to do to get those fancy sounds!

I have created two long vowel charts: one basic, and the other with more long vowel patterns. I have included four different options for the charts.

1. One basic with no pictures

2. One basic with pictures

3. One more advanced with no pictures

4. One more advanced with pictures

I usually give the first list to my Within the Word--Early spellers. I have them tape this in their spelling notebooks as a reference as we begin to learn the basic long vowel patterns. As students move through the spectrum of Within Word, I introduce the other long vowel patterns with the second chart.

It's also helpful to hang these charts up in the classroom, especially if you have a spelling word wall!
