Do you need to keep your students learning (and assessing!) whilst you are working with individual students, small groups, or marking writing and other work? My students loved doing these quality learning activities with me, and I decided to automate them by turning them into Instructional Videos with Interactive Whiteboard Games Linked to the National Literacy Progressions (ACARA) so that they can keep learning whilst I focus on other needs of my students! The video itself allows for differentiation through allowing students to draw, say or write their answers or a combination of these. You can even extend advanced students by seeing if they can use the words in a sentence before time runs out!
My No Prep 'Literacy Progression 'Pops' Videos are aligned to the Australian Curriculum Literacy Progressions from ACARA and allow children to practice the skills needed for each progression level with fun and interactive Individual Whiteboard Games whilst allowing you to quickly scan and assess who is ready to move up to the next level, or to allow students to review these skills before report time! You can also use them for individual students or small groups (on an iPad or other computer) who are below level so they can revise whilst you are explaining another activity to the rest of the class.
This video is built around Phonological Awareness Level 3 under the Reading and Viewing Area: PhA3. At this level, a Student:
- orally blends two or three phonemes together to make a one-syllable word (a-sh, s-u-n, b-i-n, sh-i-p)
- orally segments words of two or three phonemes into separate phonemes (c-a-t, s-u-n, k-i-ck)
- identifies the number of phonemes that make up a spoken one-syllable word comprised of less than four phonemes
This video will allow you to see which students are able to meet these levels. I like to play this video in the first few weeks of Kindergarten, Year 1 or Year 2 or with students with Learning Delays or other Additional Needs - to make sure I know which students can meet this progression and which might need more practice!
