Description

Finding materials for science lessons is very time consuming. This resource on light, heat (or thermal), and sound energy is geared to save you valuable teacher-time. You get student booklets with basic information, along with the text for the teacher. There are links and QR codes for additional information. There are 5-7 investigations written up for the teacher on each topic with two response options for students—scripted questions for written responses or Interactive Notebook pictures to use in those responses. Plus, you get worksheets. You’ll have so much, you’ll have choices.

You easily have three weeks of science materials here. Most investigations are pretty simple to execute and require items typically found at home or in your classroom. With remote learning, you can easily demo or offer some investigations for doing at home. With in-class learning, you could set up several for a day’s rotation of science investigations. Don’t try to tackle light, heat, and sound alone.

Tips from Walk with Me a Second:

✂️ Teacher Note: Most of the pages are in black ink. The picture cards are offered in color but will print nicely in grayscale, if you need that option. I made thick lines for most cutting line to make this easier. Some pages have multiple student copies to save paper.

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
NGSSK-2-ETS1-2
Develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.
NGSSK-PS3-1
Make observations to determine the effect of sunlight on Earth's surface. Examples of Earth's surface could include sand, soil, rocks, and water. Assessment of temperature is limited to relative measures such as warmer/cooler.
NGSS2-PS1-4
Construct an argument with evidence that some changes caused by heating or cooling can be reversed and some cannot. Examples of reversible changes could include materials such as water and butter at different temperatures. Examples of irreversible changes could include cooking an egg, freezing a plant leaf, and heating paper.
NGSS1-PS4-4
Use tools and materials to design and build a device that uses light or sound to solve the problem of communicating over a distance. Examples of devices could include a light source to send signals, paper cup and string "telephones," and a pattern of drum beats. Assessment does not include technological details for how communication devices work.
NGSS1-PS4-2
Make observations to construct an evidence-based account that objects can be seen only when illuminated. Examples of observations could include those made in a completely dark room, a pinhole box, and a video of a cave explorer with a flashlight. Illumination could be from an external light source or by an object giving off its own light.
