Description

This resource includes two separate activities on lichens that can be used in your units on Fungi or Community Ecology. The first activity is an informational text and critical reading activity, and the second activity is a lab involving lichens. The reading includes facts about the mutualistic nature of lichens, the structure of lichens, and the important role that lichens play in the environment. Choose to use the traditional printable version, or the paperless, digital Google Apps version. Both Google Slides and Google Forms Versions are included.

What is included in this resource?

  • Editable and printable informational text reading on lichens
  • Paperless Digital Versions of the text reading activity for use in Google Drive, Google Classroom, and /or Microsoft OneDrive
  • Google Forms Version of Text Reading (Editable)
  • Google Slides Version of Text Reading (Not editable)
  • Editable and printable lab activity on lichens
  • Teacher Guide and Answer Key
  • Teacher Guide for Google Apps

Both activities are suitable for life science or biology students in grades 7 – 12. I use both activities when I am teaching my unit on Community Ecology.

The first activity is an informational text reading on lichens. The four student pages include the reading and a set of critical reading and analysis questions. The reading includes facts about the mutualistic nature of lichens, structure of lichens, and the important role that lichens play in the environment. Pictures are included to enhance the text. Following the reading, students will answer 11 questions to check for reading comprehension and critical analysis of the text. This makes an excellent homework assignment prior to the lab activity. This reading activity can be completed using the printable handouts or the digital handouts available in Google Drive.

The second activity is a short lab exercise on lichens. In this lab, students will observe both living specimens of lichens as well as prepared slides. Materials you will need for this lab include: Microscope, hand lens, living specimens of lichens, and prepared slides of lichens.

The TEACHER GUIDE includes everything you need for the successful completion of both activities, including answer keys, lab prep, and suggestions for lab implementation.

Answer keys are included for each activity.
