Description

What Do You Get?

This video and the provided resources in the "Supporting Information" file are a part of my Mnemonics Phonics curriculum. The video is a mini-lesson for the letter A. Because it is a short lesson, it is great for letter introduction and letter review - daily. This allows necessary repetition for our struggling learners. The "Supporting Information" file includes a 5-day plan for ways to use the video. It also includes a 5-day plan with supporting activities for learning the letter A. These activities were designed for after the video lesson: a simple close-read text, puppet puzzles, and handwriting sheets. If you are pleased with the "Letter A Song" video and activities, there are Mnemonics Phonics videos for other letters in the alphabet available for purchase. If you are interested in additional activities that help reinforce the 5 pillars of reading, check out more of my Mnemonics Phonics sets.

Background Information

I began my teaching career in 2000. Over 15 years ago, I noticed my students struggling with the letter D. Out of desperation, I wrote a song with a PowerPoint that included mnemonic devices. I purposefully integrated techniques that I learned from speech therapists, too. They loved it, and my students finally mastered the letter. Then, my students (most struggling) began asking me what the song is for other letters. Eventually, I created a song with mnemonic devices for every letter. As my students fell in love with the songs and their characters, I began developing more resources that incorporated strategies used by occupational therapists and other literacy experts, to help support the songs: building the letter-shaped character as puppets, handwriting worksheets featuring the song's mnemonic letter, and so on. Despite the fact that I am not a gifted artist - at all - the students loved the mnemonic art. The development of my curriculum kept growing and growing with more features. An action research was administered using the various features of my program - Mnemonic Phonics. The data collected revealed that comparable students who participated in Mnemonics Phonics showed considerably more growth than students who did not participate. Mnemonics Phonics - using all of its components, can be effective as a supplementary or intervention program.

Closing Thoughts

My ultimate goal is to provide resources that can make a difference in the lives of struggling learners, but I want it to be user-friendly and fun for you - the teacher. I thank you for your support, and I hope you and your students love Mnemonics Phonics as much as we have!
