What educators are saying

My students love this project!! It is engaging, fun, and instructionally challenging for all my students.
My students loved learning about Leap Year and I even heard them discussing "Leaplings" with other adults in the building and explained what that meant. It was great to see them excited about learning and teaching others!!

Description

Leap year is upon us!  It’s time to spring into action with some fun-filled learning! This Leap Day project-based learning activity for grades 2-5 will have your students hopping through a series of math, reading, writing, and grammar puzzles to put together a time capsule.

This PBL includes 6 activities related to celebrating Leap Day 2024. Students will jump from one activity to the next finding items to put in a time capsule, including newspapers, photos, school work samples, and more. Then they will lock the capsule for the next four years to capture this moment in time.

Each of these activities requires students to use and apply academic and problem-solving skills to answer questions and complete puzzles, ultimately uncovering the code word that will seal in the Leap Day fun.

This fun activity includes two separate versions of the puzzles, one for grades 2-3 and one for grades 4-5, so it is easy to differentiate.

You can jump right into learning with this easy-to-prep and implement activity. No long supply lists. No complicated instructions. All you have to do is print and present. So even teachers can enjoy the moment!

FAQs

Q: What is included in the PBL?

A: A colored version, a black and white version, and an answer key.

Q: Do students complete this activity individually or in groups?

A: That’s up to you! PBL activities are great for collaboration, however, you can choose to allow students to work on this individually as well.

Q: How can I use the colored version in class without wasting ink?

A; The colored version is great if your students are working in pairs or small groups. Print and laminate the colored pages and have students use expo markers to record their answers. When they are done, they can erase their marks and you can reuse the pages over and over again.

Q: How long will this PBL take my students?

A:  We estimate this activity will take between 45-60 minutes.  Time may vary depending on class factors and whether or not students are working in groups.

Q; Why are there two versions of some activities”

A: With the exception of the letter-writing and crossword activities, each task has a version more appropriate for grades 2-3 and another that is more suitable for grades 4-5.

Q: Is this a hands-on activity?

A: Students will use the information provided on the resource pages to solve real-world-based problems and tasks.  We've also provided pages for students to show their solutions.  The preview has some great pictures to give you a good idea of what the resource includes.
