Land and Water Forms Project Based Learning

This land and water forms project-based learning experience has students taking on the role of a cartographer and designing their own maps! A student-friendly project outline is included, which provides specific criteria for students to follow as they go about designing their maps. Students will need to include a map title, a compass rose, labels for all land and water forms, and a transportation route. 9 map “puzzle pieces” are included, which students can manipulate in order to construct their own maps prior to drawing them on the map template provided. A land and water forms reference chart is also provided, which gives the names and definitions of 10 land and water forms (island, peninsula, cape, archipelago, isthmus, lake, gulf, bay, system of lakes, and strait). Students practice identifying the land and water forms on their maps by completing a map coordinates recording sheet. Lastly, students complete a creative writing task in which they write about their journey along their map’s transportation route. A project rubric is included.
