LITERACY STRATEGIES: Middle School Reading

What educators are saying
Description
Middle School students are still learning how to read well and they need strategies! This reading strategies resource pays special attention is to close reading, metacognition, and repairing reading when meaning breaks down. I use these tools and strategies every day with 7th and 8th graders, but especially frequently in Title I classes, Academic Intervention Services, and tutoring. I also give many of these tools to parents of struggling readers so that students have consistent and effective strategies to use at home.
Many of these posters and bookmarks can be used effectively in math, science, social studies, and specials courses to facilitate better reading in those classes, as well as in ELA.
THIS 26-PAGE LITERACY STRATEGIES RESOURCE INCLUDES:
- Posters and bookmarks for: Close Readers, Text Coding, Decoding Strategies, How to Read a Textbook, ELA Exam Checklist
- Posters for: Metacognition, How to Choose a Book, Schema, Inferencing, Skills That Good Readers Implement, Where Can I Find the Answer?
- Bookmarks for: Fix-Up Strategies
- Tools for: Comprehension; Reading Cue Cards (Predicting, Wondering, Connecting, Noticing, Figuring Out, Visualizing)
- Learning Objectives, Common Core State Standards, Terms of Use
Posters are created to look professional when printed on 18x24 or 24x36 poster paper and hung on the wall as anchor-charts. Of course, 8.5x11 posters work well, als
DIFFERENTIATION for students with special needs is built in to all these tools. Consistently using these strategies in all subject areas will create common language, help students transfer their ELA skills to content classes, and help struggling readers increase their skills and their performance.
Some of these tools are adapted from ideas originated by Chris Tovani in “I Read It, But I Don’t Get It” and Nancy N. Boyles in “Constructing Meaning Through Kid-Friendly Comprehension Strategies.”
