Description
Finding decodable readers for kindergarteners that are about the science content they are learning about can be difficult. I created this decodable reader so that my kindergarteners could read about pushes and pulls in their small reading groups WHILE they were experiencing pushes and pulls in our science class.
If you are in need of lessons for the science portion of your Push and Pull Unit, please consider checking out my Kindergarten Push and Pull Bundle (link below). This decodable reader is included in that Bundle along with 4 lessons AND their associated materials. It is much cheaper to buy the bundle than to buy the resources individually. This decodable reader, however, can stand alone or work with any lessons you may already have.
If you want your little scientists to have the opportunity to read a decodable text that is about the push and pull science content they are engaged with in science instruction, then maybe this is the right resource for you!
The book is NOT 100% decodable. It has plenty of decodable words along with plenty of kindergarten heart/memory/flash/high frequency words (depending on your journey with SoR, I am not sure what you might be calling them :) ). There are a few necessary content words to help students build the necessary vocabulary and background to support the science. ALL 7 of these words are addressed on the first page on a Words to Know page. Depending on where you are in your phonics scope and sequence and the memory words you've introduced, some of these may even be decodable for your students (for example, "bar" may be decodable if you've introduced /ar/ and "ball" may be readable if your students know the memory word "all".). Most will easily pick up "push" and "pull" from their science learning during the week!
The book features easy to read font, clipart that easily depicts a push or a pull combined with a big arrow that highlights the science learning by showing a push moving away from the pusher and a pull moving toward the puller.
Included in this resource you will receive:
- 2 versions of the book: a black and white version and a color version
- complete directions for how to copy and compile the books (I made it very simple- no one needs complicated copying/stapling/collating nightmares! There is a visual in my PDF preview- click on it above to see for yourself!)
- The book includes a cover, 6 student pages to read, 1 Words to Know page, 1 page meant for students to write and illustrate their own "I can push" or "I can pull page" if you choose to include it, and 1 "Let's Think" page that has 5 questions that are a combination of reading comprehension and science questions based on the book.
- Teacher answer key for the comprehension page
- 1 full page for students to use for writing and illustrating a response to the book for teachers who prefer this option to the kids writing a final book page
- This resource is activated in TPT Easel for any teacher who finds it helpful to project the book in Student View.
**Sorry: TPT does NOT have a resource option for "Decodable Readers" or even just for "Book," so I picked "Guided Reading Books" even though they are not the same...
