What are Communities?
Pages 2-10 focus on the different kinds of communities in which we belong- family, school, classroom, and social. Your students will also learn about their planet, continent, country, state, city, neighborhood, and home.
Rules and Laws
Pages 11-25 give you lessons to teach rules and laws. They discuss and sort rules, write about what life would be like without rules, and discuss how rules vary in different places.
Making Choices and Making Economic Choices
On pages 26-56, students will learn about making good choices with their behavior and their money. They learn about consumers and producers, opportunity cost, the different ways to use our money, scarcity, and incentives.
Types of Communities
Pages 57-71 cover urban, rural, and suburban communities. Your students will learn the difference, visit some communities via Google Earth, do some sorting activities, and write a book.

Pages 72-82 teach your students about the cardinal directions and making maps from the bird's eye view.
Culture
On pages 83-96, students will learn about why living around different cultures is good for us. We can learn about different foods, music, and celebrations. They will learn about different festivals right here in their state. They will also learn about how culture is different in the different regions of Kentucky.
Community Traditions
On pages 97-115, students will learn about the symbols of Kentucky and the businesses of Kentucky. They will vote on their favorite places in their community and can make a community lapbook.
Learning about the Past
Pages 116-150 give your students a peek into the past. They will learn about how technology has changed. They will look at photos to find out about transportation, children, technology, and work from the past.
Change over Time
Pages 151-161 focus on how the gadgets we use today differ from the gadgets of the past. It also teaches about how humans modify the environment.
Goods and People Move
Pages 162-170 teaches students about the natural resources of Kentucky and where they are found. Students will learn about why we trade and why people move to new communities.
Democratic Principles
Pages 171-186 teach students about voting through a fun mascot-selection vote. They learn about special places in the United States that have meaning for our country. They learn about rights and responsibilities. They also learn about what our government does for us.
Community Helpers
Students will use pages 187-204 to learn about community helpers and jobs.

Pages 205-223 teach students about the government and how to be a good citizen.
