Description

Here is my second set of instructional plans for addressing the K-1 Common Core Writing Standards. This packet dives into standards five and six. (Standard four is not taught in K-1.)

Writing standard five is all about students sharing their writing with others and using their feedback to improve their writing. I developed an "author chat" sharing format that guides students through a four or five-step sharing and commenting process. To go along with this format, I made a chart walking through the steps using picture clues and sentence starters for students to reference as they are conducting their author chats. The first grade chart is more advanced in that it includes a focus section. I have provided ten possible chat focus topics, along with leaving room on the chart for you to set a different focus. These charts can be distributed to partner groups, enlarged and posted in the room, projected onto the board during author chat time, or kept inside student writing folders/journals.

Writing standard six is challenging, yet extremely engaging, for students. It focuses on the exploration and use of digital tools to produce and distribute writing. I came up with a list of ten different class activities that you can do with your students or assign during independent work time or as a center activity. Additionally, I developed five lesson plans using digital tools and included simple, color-coded, easy-to-follow story templates for you to load onto student computers and use during your writing/digital tools lessons. You simply load the templates onto the student computers, go through the lesson I have provided with students as they complete sentence stems with the templates on their computers, and print out their finished products ready to publish and distribute.

(Please Note: These templates were made in Microsoft Word and saved as a .doc file. At the end of the packet, you will find a list of websites that can direct you on how to open a .doc file using a Mac. Also, please be aware that the preview file is a PDF. Therefore, you will not be able to load it onto student computers for editing. If you choose to purchase the resource, you will receive it as a .DOC file for student editing.)
