    Description

    This is a pair-pack of our popular resources: Just Mercy Movie Guide and Capital Punishment Class Debate. Both go well together for any classroom covering the complex topic of capital punishment. Students can analyze the film and contemplate the issues within the U.S. justice system. They can later have a class debate about whether capital punishment, in itself, should be abolished within government.

    In the movie guide, there is a set of resources for viewing Just Mercy in your classroom. The viewing guide is detailed and arranged in time-stamped sections. In addition to filling out the viewing guide questions, students will: Complete discussion questions that can be done individually or in small groups, do a character analysis, and be assessed with a quiz. These resources will help students to think critically about the movie's portrayal of Bryan Stevenson and Walter McMillian.

    In the class debate, there is is a set of lesson materials that culminates in a class debate about capital punishment. Students will: Research how capital punishment has been used in U.S. justice system, analyze different viewpoints, be assigned a position to take, collaborate within teams, prepare main arguments, peer review each other's reasoning, and will participate in an academic debate that is guided by moderator questions (included). The objective is to help students think critically, learn to articulate a view, and relate to the other side.
