What educators are saying

Used this resource with my Liberty & Justice elective class. Students were able to work in groups to discuss the pros & cons of each potential jury member. Students were engaged in discussion & enjoyed this activity.
My students really enjoyed using this resource for a jury simulation. They generated good discussion while working in groups on the assignment. They submitted the final statement individually. So, this assignments was used for group work and then individual application.

Description

Students will be introduced to a case about college student Amy in a case of drunk driving with damage to property. Overviews of the legal system include this simulation of jury selection, understanding of key terms in court proceedings, and an argument of innocence vs. guilt.

Students will read descriptions of 30 potential jury members and create a list of favorable versus unfavorable qualities about each.

They will then evaluate the pros and cons of this potential jury member, considering potential for bias, assumptions the jury member might make about the defendant, and any history or “red flags” this person presents to be a fair member to examine and hear this case. Students will then take on the role to either defend or prosecute Amy and write their opening argument.
