Take your 2nd through 4th Grade students on a journey to outer space by introducing them to an engaging unit all about Gustav Holst’s Orchestral Suite, “The Planets”! With the included rhythmic, movement and exploratory activities, students will experience and connect with Holst’s orchestral suite in a whole new way while exploring and applying known musical concepts.
The included lessons and activities were designed to be used in a Teacher-led, Synchronous Learning Environment.

What type of activities are included?
- Within the included Google Slides file, “The Planets” Virtual Field Trip, there are Musical activities, Fun Facts and Informational videos included for each of the 7 planets in Holst’s orchestral suite
- Mars: The Bringer of War
- Activity: Movement Play-Along Video (Embedded in Slides)
- Students will engage in locomotor movements while they explore the surface of Mars, as well as learn a Body percussion ostinato to connect with the meter of the piece
- Venus: The Bringer of Peace
- Activity: Instrument Focus: The Celesta
- Students will learn about the Celesta and its use in other pieces/movies along with a Compare & Contrast Activity with the piano
- Mercury: The Winged Messenger
- Activity: Solfa Practice (So, Mi and La)
- Students will practice singing solfege patterns while learning about how astronauts do common tasks in space!
- Jupiter: The Bringer of Joy
- Activity: Instrument Play-Along Video (Embedded in Slides)
- Students will engage with a portion of this piece by playing along with unpitched percussion instruments
- Saturn: The Bringer of Old Age
- Activity: Time Signature Recognition
- Students will connect to Saturn’s theme of time by practicing matching the correct time signature to provided sets of rhythm patterns
- Uranus: The Magician
- Activity: A Rhythm Practice Video (Focus: 4 sixteenth notes/Tikatika)
- Students will experience a Magic Show where the students practice reading rhythms (Quarter note, 2 Eighth notes, Quarter rest, 4 sixteenth notes)
- Neptune: The Mystic
- Activity: Create a Speech Piece using The Planets Rhythm Cards (PDF)
