Description

Jamestown Colony and the New World Primary Source Play With Worksheet

This fantastic, amusing worksheet includes a short scene from a play called "Eastward Hoe" that was performed in England in 1604. In the scene, a captain tells them all sorts of outlandish lies to entice two men to move to Virginia.

This is a great activity to have your students act out in class! My students loved this and even used some hilarious British accents to add to the scene. It is a fantastic way to introduce students to reasons why people would come to the New World.

After we read the play, I lead a class discussion on how hard life was in Jamestown to contrast the play with the realities of the New World.

Students then complete a short included worksheet on the play in which they analyze the scene and then create their own advertisement for the New World.

An editable Google Docs version of the play and worksheet are included for your convenience.

For an excellent companion activity, please see this beautiful Jamestown Colony PowerPoint Lesson.
