What educators are saying

Another great resource from Peacefield History! I love that I can count on her quality and just print and go. They have to read, analyze, and engage.
This activity worked well as a closure activity to our study of the War of 1812. I liked that there are a variety of sources used in the activity including artwork, songs, and text.

Description

This lesson discusses the the causes and effects of the War of 1812. To understand the causes, the class will visit an interactive website that discusses why people were both for and against the War of 1812. (The website no longer works, so I've included the videos on my Youtube channel for teachers.)

In order to understand the impact of the war, students will visit four stations which represent varying impacts. They include westward movement, the growth of American art and literature, the destruction of Washington D.C., and the growth of Andrew Jackson's popularity after the Battle of New Orleans. Students will examine primary sources to find the the evidence related to those impacts. Both classroom and digital versions are included to meet the needs of teachers in all types of classrooms.

(NOTE: This lesson does not really focus on the battles of the War itself. I cover other wars with greater detail in my classes, and there are only so many days in the school year).

Included in this resource:

  • A PowerPoint Version of the handout and stations (editable)
  • A PDF Version of the handout and stations (not editable)
  • A PowerPoint version and a Google Slides version of the presentation
  • A lesson plan with guidance for implementation
  • A Youtube link to the necessary videos for the Causes of the War of 1812
