Introducing the Periodic Table? This is my all time favorite lesson to teach. Introduce the Periodic Table with this puzzle, and have students telling YOU how the Periodic Table was organized!
Students work together to discover the best way to organize colored/numbered shape pieces. All you need for this activity is a color printer, sandwich bags (or paper clips) and a prize for the winning group (not totally necessary, but fun). Handout, answer key and lesson plan included. This is the BEST activity for introducing the Periodic Table EVER! My students (8th graders) got SO into this activity, it even surprised them how much they liked it!

Robbie L - Holy cow-moly! What a FABULOUS idea! It took some creative forks in the road, and each time, it was easy to guide students back to the idea of organizing using patterns for every item. Once they had it started, it was a race to the end. The questions handout is perfect for this too! I am not a creative person, and it takes me so long to make handouts with shapes so I seldom turn to sorting activities like this. I am so thankful for this activity! It's a great way to make them think it through.
Sarah S - This was quite literally the greatest thing I have found on TPT! My freshman integrated science students LOVED it and got a TON out of it. The only edits I made were that I made game piece outlines in word so that I could copy them on colored paper instead of using all my colored ink for the quarter, and I modified the lesson plan so that all groups had to come up with the pattern instead of calling everyone over when the first group got it. Still, hands down AMAZING lesson plan. Thanks!

The Marvelous Middle - As a fellow TPT seller, I always love coming across a resource that blows me away. This resource was such a creative way to get students thinking about the arrangement of the periodic table. I loved watching my students work together to wrap their heads around this "puzzle"! The kids especially loved hearing that the process they used (looking at the properties of the cards) was basically the same process Mendeleev would have taken to put arrange the periodic table (looking at properties of the elements). Susan C - This was the best thing I have purchased in a long time! It was easy to prepare the directions were clear and there were two options, one for a colored printer and one to print on colored paper. My students were engaged from beginning to end. The student conversation was spot on and very valuable. The students were able to synthesize what the missing tile/card would be. Students completed the included reflections sheet using thoughtful responses because of their experiences. I loved this and I will use this again in the future!
The Lab - This activity was a huge hit during online learning. I grouped students into breakout rooms and had them work on one Google Slide. I could pop in and it was great to hear the discussions taking place. Looking forward to using it in class next year.

Takes a little bit of prep time on the part of the teacher (printing out pictures, and then I laminated before cutting out), but it is totally worth it, and they can be used year after year. It really drove home the idea of how seemingly random things can be categorized, and it allows students to work together. AWESOME!!
