Description

Introducing Shakespeare? Before beginning Act 1/the prologue of the play, generate anticipation with this digital background breakout activity. Students learn about the author, the Elizabethan Era, theater in England, the Globe Theatre, elements of drama (soliloquy, foil, comic relief, etc.), archaic vocabulary, and the prologue of Romeo & Juliet.

Hook your students and engage them BEFORE reading The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet (or any other play) by William Shakespeare.

NOTE: If you are teaching a play other than Romeo & Juliet, analyzing the prologue still serves as a way to introduce your students to Early Modern English.

The escape room can be completed 2:1 or 1:1. Plan 55-90 minutes for students to complete the escape room depending on the level of your students. If you need to finish in a certain amount of time, consider completing a lock or two with your students. This escape room could easily be completed over the course of two days/class periods if necessary.

No prep. Just post the link and go. (Unless you want to print the lock notes sheet.)

⚠️ While this resources is designated as "no prep," teachers will definitely want to preview the escape room ahead of time and make sure that they are comfortable with the clues, lock answers, and navigation of the escape room. I highly recommend you take the time to read the NOTES TO TEACHER and HOW TO ESCAPE within the product file prior to using this with your students. READING DIRECTIONS is the key to success (which students don't always do.) Clues and activities are meant to be challenging but achievable for all.

⚠️ Teachers: Google account access is necessary for this escape. PLEASE CHECK YOUR DISTRICT'S PRIVACY FILTER / FIREWALL PRIOR TO USING WITH STUDENTS. (Sometimes my digital escape rooms work just fine with teacher accounts, but then student accounts receive error notifications or "request for access" notifications due to privacy filters.)

I do not have control over your district's network or its restrictions, and if students are not authorized to access certain sites outside of the network, I am unable to solve these tech issues for you. You can contact your district's help desk / tech support to see if they can authorize access.

Here is a list of all the websites used in the escape in case you need to contact your IT department or tech support:

  • Google Sites (or skip right to Thinglink)
  • Google Forms
  • Genial.ly
  • Thinglink
  • WordWall

Once again, direct all issues to the Q&A section. I will do my very best to help you. Some tech issues are outside of my control.
