Teach this lesson in-person or remotely by sharing the included Google Slideshow.
Drawing in perspective can often be a frustrating idea for beginners, but this powerpoint breaks it down into simple steps that anyone can learn. This lesson can be used in an art class, integrated in core subjects, or just for fun (kids LOVE learning how to draw this in perspective). When I teach perspective to my art 7th graders every year, this is how I begin the conversation.
This product includes a presentation which introduces students to the concept of perspective through real photographs, then leads them through a step-by-step tutorial to draw simple boxes using the vanishing point. The tutorial is prepared so that students gradually build knowledge and skills, eventually leading toward independence:
- The first example is teacher-directed. Students should follow steps precisely and not go ahead.
- The second example is guided practice. While still following the steps, students demonstrate understanding in larger chunks of tasks.
- The third example is independent practice. By this time, students should understand the concept and be able to demonstrate it. Students will articulate “next steps” by answering the questions in red.
The lesson concludes with a review slide to assess comprehension, questions can be completed orally or written down individually. This lesson should take 45 minutes, but in the event you finish early there is a short game at the end of the presentation to fill time.
This lesson could be used on it's own, but was designed to be part of a larger unit. Paired with TheColorThief's other perspective lessons, students will be able to go from novice to expert, understanding why, how, and when to use the vanishing point to draw from both imagination and life.
