The included activities were created with the following principles in mind:
-Skills are more meaningful when they are not taught in isolation.
-An integrated approach helps students see the “big picture” of the vocabulary/concepts they are learning and why they are learning them.
-High quality vocabulary instruction with inclusion of morphological instruction will benefit students’ reading fluency and reading comprehension.
-Forming connections between unknown words and known words will help students acquire and retain new vocabulary.
-Incorporating grammar concepts like parts of speech, and emphasizing how each part of speech is used in sentences, can benefit students’ written and oral syntax as well as reading comprehension.
-Teaching students to analyze word parts and think critically about word meaning/part of speech using context and morphology as clues can improve inferencing skills.
