How to use this Writing a News Article Template, Lesson, and Rubric:

This lesson teaches students how to write an information paragraph. Students will compare objective and subjective statements in order to identify the proper tone and content of informational writing.  They will also learn how to organize an information paragraph.

You can begin this lesson with the Writing an Information Paragraph Slideshow Lesson.  This lesson is formatted for both Microsoft PowerPoint® and Google Slides®.  Students will explore the characteristics of informational writing, including formal tone and objective information. They will read an example of an information paragraph and then identify whether or not certain statements could be used as supporting details for the paragraph.  These statements demonstrate objective information, subjective opinions, formal tone, and informal statements so that students differentiate between information writing and other forms of composition. Finally, students will be guided through an example of the writing process using the worksheets provided.

As you work through the lesson with your students, they can fill out the corresponding Information Paragraph Writing Guided Note.  This guided note template prompts students to make note of important information from the slideshow lesson.

Students will be prompted to practice the skills covered in the slideshow lesson using the Information Paragraph Writing Practice Worksheet.  This worksheet includes a topic along with several bullet-point supporting details.  Students need to analyze these points in order to determine whether or not they would be suitable for an information paragraph about the topic provided.

To scaffold the writing process, an Information Paragraph Graphic Organizer has also been provided.  This graphic organizer can be used to support students in writing any information paragraph.
