What educators are saying

I am setting this up as a Forest Day activity. I like to use interactive stations and this will fit perfectly. Thanks! This is an excellent resource.
This is really useful for incorporating some of the new curriculum’s outcomes on indigenous ways of knowing!

Description

This activity is a great way to help students understand the important role plants played in how Indigenous Peoples of Canada lived off the land.

In this “Living Off the Land” activity, students will learn how some plants were used by Indigenous Peoples, specifically the Cree and Blackfoot People, through 10 different scenarios. These teachings were gifted by a Blackfoot and Cree Elder with the intent of being used in schools for education and appreciation. It was made in conjunction with a resource creator who identifies as Blackfoot.

What’s Included

  • 16 plant cards (with the Indigenous name and description of how they were used by Cree or Blackfoot People)
    • Including coloured copies, B/W, and digital
  • 10 different scenarios (where students are lost in the woods and must use their plant cards to solve problems)
  • A student recording sheet
  • A reflection for when the activity is complete

Please check out our preview to see examples of each of the above-mentioned items
