Independent Study Contract (*AP Appropriate)

An independent study for a high school student fosters his or her attitude, behavior, and thinking skills--all things necessary for post-secondary success. And in a high school independent study situation, students work on their own, set their own priorities, and determine their own study schedule; however, a key instructor is available to help. Working independently in high school shows a student's initiative as he or she directs his or her own education. According to Sterling Academy, "[t]hey learn to delve deeper to understand the reasons behind things rather than simply memorizing answers to test questions or lists of facts and figures. In effect, they learn how to learn." And because students create their own learning goals, they are also responsible for achieving those goals. The self-discipline required as students learn time management for more complex projects forces students to determine which work should be accomplished first. and builds tenacity. I have worked with numerous independent study situations and will attest that student gain is tremendous BECAUSE they are in charge.

I have also included a student sample contract submission (PDF) for student distribution as an example. I hope the experience helps you and your students grow and discover together. Independent studies are a great way for students to explore ideas that are not covered in classes, and they are a great way for students to explore possibilities for the future.
