What educators are saying

This was a fun activity to do with my students when studying imperialism; I will definitely use it again.
My students enjoyed this introduction to our unit on Imperialism. I did end up creating a PowerPoint to go along with the directions and a breakdown at the end. This led to another activity before diving into our content. Thank you!

Description

This engaging cooperative learning experience will help your students understand the start of the Age of Imperialism.

Small groups of students create different anonymous countries and must conquer "territory" - which are just items in your classroom. While the rules are the same for all students, the directions each group receives are different - resulting in an experience like how some countries could conquer so much territory, while others were unprepared for the land scramble.

My classes always are super engaged and enthusiastic with this classroom activity. The activity definitely helps students to understand how certain countries (Great Britain, for example) conquered so much land while others like the United States were late to the game.

The download includes detailed teacher directions along with 5 sets of student directions for 5 different groups.

An editable Google Doc version of the activity is also included featuring recommended video link and a reading to debrief for after the game.

An excellent lesson to use after this activity is this one on Crimes Against Humanity in the Congo Free State, which shows the devastating impact European imperialism had on indigenous people.

Both resources can also be downloaded at a discount as part of the my Age of Imperialism Unit Bundle!
