Does nonfiction feel like a snoozefest? Students can't relate to it? This lesson focuses on finding the central idea of small informational articles that are about REAL people and REALLY interesting hobbies - many that your students can relate to! Things like raising animals, solving a Rubik's cube, breakdancing, rapping, and tap dancing Christmas trees!

The slideshow presentation is colorful and engaging with lots of photographs to hold the students' attention. This makes nonfiction INTERESTING for students and they will want to talk about what they're reading!

The lesson is meant to be used for whole group instruction using a projector or SmartBoard for the students to view. Sharing the slideshow in Google Classroom will not work as the students would be able to see the answers in the speaker notes and/or the sequential slide.

So what's included?

  • introduction slide for teachers with tips for teaching this lesson
  • vocabulary review with definitions
  • steps for students to grow from identifying a topic to a cohesive central idea
  • models for students to write central ideas in complete sentences
  • 4 practice texts (each text is 2-3 paragraphs in length)
  • 1 independent practice slide with a different text
  • 4 multiple-choice higher-order thinking questions (2 more texts each with 2 HOT questions)
  • answer key with explanations
  • notes built within the slideshow for teachers to help with instruction (speaker notes section at the bottom of the screen)

Focus standards: RI 1, RI2, RI3, RI 4, RI5

Materials: computer and projector/Smartboard

Time: 30-60 minutes

Delivery: small or whole group instruction (not meant for asynchronous or online classes)

Note: Students do not computers or Chromebooks for this lesson. They will need paper and a pencil only for the independent work slide (slide 21). Use your judgment if students should write responses to the other practice slides.
