What educators are saying

Thank you so much for sharing this resource! My students were engaged. I admire your hard work and creativity!
WONDERFUL practice for a large topic with my 3rd graders. We did them together throughout the year and did deep dives into the different parts. By the end of the year, my kids were able to argue why certain words were a specific part of speech!

Description

This interactive activity has students identifying parts of speech in sentences by moving digital pieces (or simply labeling) over each word depending on its function in the sentence.

Have you been teaching the 8 parts of speech to your students only to have to explain how “run” can be a noun in one sentence, a verb in another, and an interjection in yet another? Help your students really master parts of speech by having them identify them in the context of different sentences. It works in any classroom setting - even without technology. You will be amazed how much your students learn with just a few minutes each day of practice identifying parts of speech.

This resource is designed to be versatile and fit in any classroom.

SMART BOARD- Pull up the google slides on the Smart Board and allow students to take turns dragging the parts of speech pieces over the correct words.

PROJECTOR- Project the sentences onto a white board and have students use dry erase markers to label each part of speech.

WHITE BOARD- Just write up the sentence on the white board and allow students to come to the board and label the words with parts of speech. Have students not at the board, follow along on the printable sentence and checklist.

CHROMEBOOKS/IPADS- Assign each student the daily sentence slide in Google Classroom and allow them each to manipulate the moveable pieces.

PRINTABLES- Students handouts with the sentences and individual check-lists for each are included to print for stations, morning work, small group instruction, or even to use along side the Smart Board while students wait their turn.

This resource is designed to take just 10 minutes of class time each day whether in a whole group, small group, or independent settings.  Encountering the material for short, but frequent amounts of time, has been shown to greatly improve a student’s ability to not just memorize, but really master the 8 parts of speech.

This resource includes:

  • 20 individual sentence slides (Google Slides) with moveable parts of speech pieces for students to click and drag over the words. Slides are grouped in sets of 5.
  • 4 printable student handouts with 5 sentences each. These handouts match the sets of 5 sentence slides so that you can pass out the student handouts during whole group or small group instruction allowing each student to participate.
  • Teacher Discussion guides for each sentence that outline words to define, things to point out in the sentence, questions to ask students and prompt natural discussion, AND tips for extending the material and teach/review additional concepts.
  • Step-by-step guides to use and make the most of this resource in whole group instruction and small group instruction.
  • Tips for assigning the slides to students to complete independently in stations or in Google Classroom
  • Answer Keys for all sentences (slides and handouts)
