Description

Aligned with the IBO's History Guide of 2020, the Italian (1815 - 1871) and German Unification (1815 - 1890) unit contains detailed lesson plans, note-taking activities, answer keys/review studies that will aid students in their preparation for the IB History Paper 3, Topic 11 examination on Italian and German Unification.

The topics/lessons include:

1. The 1830 and 1848 revolutions in Europe: This is a note-taking activity that will provide students with an understanding of the causes and impact that the various revolutions had on the following European nation states and/or empires: France, Poland, imperial Russia, Italy, Belgium, and in the German Confederation. [Note: A Teacher Answer Key is provided];

2. The Italian Unification in Speeches, Leadership, and Artwork: A primary source activity that focuses on the distinct leadership skills of Cavour, Mazzini, and Garibaldi. The artwork includes the pieces produced by Francesco Hayez, Remigio Legat, and Gioacchino Toma. [Note: A Teacher Answer Key is provided for the artwork that Hayez, Legat, and Toma had produced.];

3. German Unification: The Development of a 'national' identity: A primary source activity that focuses on German literature, legislation, speeches, and diplomacy that supported and strengthened the movement to unify all of the German states throughout the 18th and 19th centuries;

4. The Italian Unification Process from the French Revolution through 1870: A note-taking activity with specific guidelines and instructions that enable students to analyze the political and socioeconomic problems/factors that led to the following: distrust and disunity among the Italian regions and states before and during the Napoleonic era and Napoleonic Wars; the uprisings from 1831 to 1833 and the impact that they had on Italian unification; the 1848 revolutions and the ramifications that they had on Italian unification; and the leadership roles of Mazzini, Cavour, and Garibaldi in uniting all of the Italian states as a nation by 1870. 5. The German Unification Process from the French Revolution through 1871: A note-taking activity with specific guidelines and instructions that enable students to examine the political and socioeconomic problems/factors that led to the following: the ‘political nature’ of Germany at the time of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic War era; growing nationalistic movement during and in the post-Napoleonic era;the political uprisings in Germany during the 1830s and in the 1848 revolutions; the role of Bismarck and the successful wars waged by Prussia in the 1860s against Denmark and Austria and the victory over France in 1871. 6. German wars: the Six Weeks' War and the Franco Prussian War: A note-taking activity with specific guidelines and instructions that enable students to analyze: the belligerent nations, empires, and/or nation states involved; the causes/factors that led to the conflict; and the terms within the treaty that ended the war and the impact that these treaties had on Germany and the other belligerent nations, nation states, and/or empires involved [Note: A Teacher Answer Key is provided within this bundle];

7. Chancellor Bismarck and Domestic Policies: A note-taking activity with specific guidelines and instructions that enable students to examine the domestic policies that Chancellor Bismarck issued and the impact that each policy had on imperial Germany. [Note: A detailed Teacher Answer Key is provided within this bundle.];

8. Chancellor Bismarck and Foreign Policies: A note-taking activity with specific guidelines and instructions that enable students to analyze the various conflicts that Chancellor Bismarck and imperial Germany had to intervene to 'maintain the peace' and the impact that Chancellor Bismarck had on negotiations with various European Powers between 1871 and 1890. [Note: A detailed Teacher Answer Key is provided within this bundle.]
