I Feel I Choose Self-Control Board (Conscious Discipline)

You can help your students strengthen their self-regulation skills through this Conscious Discipline inspired "I Feel" and "I Choose" self-control boards. Included in this file are:

- "I Feel" board

- "I Choose" board

- 12 Feeling cards

- 16 Strategy cards

When a child is feeling strong emotions, he/she may go to the "safe place" to use the "I Feel" board by removing one feeling card and placing it in the top circle to describe how he/she is feeling at that moment, saying out loud "I Feel..." Next, the child will come up with a plan on how to overcome the strong emotions by selecting a strategy card by placing it in the top square.

To Prep: Laminate the pages and post the "I Feel" and "I Choose" boards on a wall in your "safe place" or place on a cookie sheet to make the boards magnetic. Cut out the feeling and strategy cards, placing velcro or magnets on the back to allow the student to move their selected pieces where they belong.

For Set-Up: Set-up these boards in a safe, quiet, traffic-free area of your classroom where you can train your students to go when they need to use the skills and strategies to help regulate emotions (make sure to teach these strategies ahead of time). For younger children, a teacher may be necessary guide the child through their emotions. Older children may be able to use this board independently after trained by the teacher.
