Description

This handout has students first explore the motives and emotions behind people's desire to limit human rights of others. Then, students learn about three genocides and answer analysis questions. Because the genocides are broken into separate sections, this can be a jigsaw, stations, or just individual work packets. The three genocides are:

  1. The Pakistani genocide of Bengalis in Bangladesh in 1971
  2. The Cambodian Genocide led by the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot from 1975-79
  3. The Rwandan genocide led by Hutus against Tutsis in 1994.

Each genocide has a map, primary or secondary source documents, and a QR code link to videos that help students understand the event. The final questions (on the back of the first page) explore what the U.S. could and should have done in these genocides and how we can potentially combat human rights violations in the U.S.
