Explicitly teaching essential research skills is critical within our digital world.

Students who are able to understand and confidently navigate search engines will ultimately be more successful in accessing information and using it for various purposes. Often, we assume that these skills develop naturally over time, however this is not always the case!

Locating information and applying critical thinking skills during the research process takes time, practice and explicit instruction. For this reason, I created this resource to support teachers in introducing the Google search engine to students as part of the overall research process.

Included in this resource are scaffolded activities targeting building student understanding of how Google works and how it can be used effectively to maximize search results.

This resource is divided into sections and each section contains scaffolded printables to support this learning process:

♦ Introductory Activities

♦ Important Terminology

♦ Understanding a Search Engine

♦ Using Key Words in your Search

♦ How Do I Know Which Link to Click?

♦ Teacher Tips page
