Description

Connect STEAM, Literacy, and writing with this Halloween STEM activity in which students engineer a Monster Trap! An excellent companion activity to the fall read aloud book How to Catch a Monster by Adam Wallace. Works perfectly in 1st Grade through 5th Grade classrooms, elementary libraries, and STEM Clubs.

The Engineering Design Process:

In this STEM Challenge, students design and build a trap to catch a monster. They follow the six step Engineering Design Process: Ask, Imagine, Plan, Create, Experiment, Improve.

Students plan, design, and execute their own ideas. After they have completed their activity, there is time for reflection on what worked and what didn't.

Monster cutouts are included. You can also use a robot, like a sphero, as the monster.

Writing Extension:

A writing extension is included for students to write about how to catch a monster using their trap.

Aligns with Common Core and NGSS.
