Description

This resource is designed for high school teachers and is intended to be used with the TED Talk How to Get Better at the Things You Care About by Eduardo Briceño.

This TED Talk addresses the key concepts of the "learning zone" and the "performance zone," two distinct states in which individuals and teams operate. The learning zone is characterized by activities aimed at improvement, where making mistakes is expected and serves as a foundation for learning. It involves deliberate practice, focusing on developing skills not yet mastered. Conversely, the performance zone is where individuals execute tasks to the best of their ability, using their existing skills and minimizing errors.

The speaker illustrates that most people stagnate in their personal and professional growth because they spend too much time in the performance zone, which hinders long-term development. To illustrate the effective use of both zones, historical and contemporary examples are provided, including the ancient Greek orator Demosthenes and the singer Beyoncé, highlighting how they engage in deliberate practice and self-reflection. The talk emphasizes the importance of a growth mindset and creating low-stakes environments for learning to thrive.

This resource includes:
