Description

If you haven't read Holes by Louis Sachar to your students, I'd love to know which hole you've been living in! Though there are dark twists and turns, kids always identify and empathize with these troubled kids. This is not a typical novel study. I have created these STEM challenges as a way for students to engage with some of the aspects of the story in a hands-on and meaningful way. Even your no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing great-grandfather would enjoy these tasks!

Included in this Resource

  • 3 Main STEM Challenges
    • Hammock STEM activity challenge
    • Digging tool STEM activity challenge
    • Palindrome STEAM art challenge

  • Sample images for the challenges
  • Science/engineering vocabulary terms / word wall cards
  • Recording pages to follow the engineering design process, both standard and graphic organizer format
  • Data recording sheets to document testing
  • Task card challenges (additional STEM activities)!
  • Printable posters for each of the main activites

PLUS: Inventor's Workshop

Inventor's workshop is a natural extension activity after finishing this book. Help Stanley Yelnats III come up with his next big invention! Follow the invention process:

→ Initial idea investigation

→ Research the Idea

→ Follow the engineering design process to build a prototype

→ File for a patent

→ Pitch the idea / marketing

→ Receive a "patent" (award included)

Materials Needed

You will not need a lot of expensive materials to complete the main STEM activities. Your options are pretty open to use what you have available, such as paper, cardboard, recyclables, tape, craft sticks, string, and fabric scraps.
