Teach your students the real history behind our American holiday!
Thanksgiving is the only major holiday celebrated in America that has a truly American story behind it. Students typically learn about the “first Thanksgiving” very early on in school. After the early primary grades, however, little is discussed about Thanksgiving. Students in middle school have a better appreciation and understanding of the history behind the holiday, so it is a good time to revisit the holiday’s history with students.
This activity will debunk some common myths about Thanksgiving, connect our American holiday to similar celebrations in other parts of the world, and provide some interesting facts and figures about the holiday in America today.
