    ✴️The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi (unit for part 1 and part 2) This complete no-fuss unit includes 20 easy to follow lesson plans with engaging thought-provoking activities and both cooperative learning activities as well as independent work, questions and charts, PowerPoints, 2 multiple choice tests and assessments. Works great for all students but is really manageable  for lower-level students. Reading is broken up between small-group reading, whole class reading, and independent reading.

    ✏️Part 1:

    • Lesson 1: Introduction to Persepolis, Censorship and Freedom of Speech. This is an interesting way to start talking about the novel as students consider what censorship looks like in our society. This lesson is made relevant to students by having them explore various social media platforms. 
    • Lesson 2: Censorship Around the World. Students work in small groups to explore what censorship looks like in other countries and then focus on Iran. 
    • Lesson 3: Historical Context of Persepolis. Students explore the history of Iran through research and lecture to establish background knowledge before reading. 
    • Lesson 4: Reading a Graphic Novel (Chapters 1-3). Students learn about the graphic novel format and begin reading the text.
    • Lesson 5: Small Group Reading (Chapters 4-6). Students read the text in small groups with discussion questions to be answered. 
    • Lesson 6: Heroes in our Society and in Persepolis (Chapters 7-8). Students think about and explore what being a hero looks like for them and what a hero looks like for Marjane. 
    • Lesson 7: Mood and Atmosphere (Chapters 9,10,11). Students are taught about mood and atmosphere and then read to determine how it has changed within the novel so far. 
    • Lesson 8: Literary symbols (Chapters 12-13). Students think about symbols in their life and then identify symbols and their meaning in the text. 
    • Lesson 9: Reading and Discussion (Chapters 14-15). Students independently read and then create their own discussion questions for the class to respond to. 
    • Lesson 10: Coming of Age in 1980’s (Chapter 17-18). Students research the 1980s in America and then compare it to Iran and Marjane’s experience after reading. 
    • Lesson 11: Analysis Essay (Chapter 19). After finishing the novel, students begin working on an analysis essay that calls for them to determine the three events in Marjane’s life that had the most significant impact on her. 

    ✏️Part 2:

    • Lesson 1: Assimilating to a new country (Chap. 20-22). Students read the testimony of Yasmin-Ghafai who left Iran to live in the U.S (supplementary text included) and compare it to Marjane's beginning experience in Austria.
    • Lesson 2: Reading and discussion (Chap. 23-26). Students independently read and then create their own discussion questions for the class to respond to. 
    • Lesson 3: The evolution of the veil (Chap. 27-28). Students analyze how the symbolism behind the veil has changed from chap 1 till now.
    • Lesson 4: Author's Purpose (Chap. 29-30). Students learn about author's purpose and determine whether Marjane is achieving it or not.
    • Lesson 5: Pre-writing for personal graphic novel project (Chap. 31-32). Students begin to brainstorm ideas for their own graphic novel.
    • Lesson 6: Author's Style (Chap. 33) Students learn about author's style than complete a chart determining what they style of Persepolis is.
    • Lesson 7: Perspectives on clothing (Chap. 34-35). Students read the supplementary text "Burka vs. Bikini" and critically analyze the argument and compare it to Marjane's perspective.
    • Lesson 8-9: Class Discussion and drafting personal graphic novel (Chap. 35-37).
    • Lesson 9: Writing a rationale for project. Students read "I Must go Home to Iran Again" and "Satrapi on Writing Persepolis" to gain insight into the author's reasoning behind her novel. Then, students work to write their own rationale as part of their project.
    • Lesson 10: Analysis test. Students complete test then work on project.
