Description

This project helps students to explore the various seasoning blends of herbs and spices that are used across the globe. Students research the spices used in various cultures, create a spice blend (from given choices such as za'atar, Chinese Five Spice, Togarashi, Garam Masala, Italian Seasoning, Jamaican Jerk, Pumpkin Pie Spice, Taco Seasoning, and Everything Bagel), and then use it to create an original recipe for an appetizer. They will research this blend's historical, and geographical ties and present their recipe and research to the class. This bundle folder contains:

  • Global Seasoning Blends Worksheet (Docs and PDF Format)
  • Seasoning Blends Recipes (Docs and PDF Format)
  • Google Slides Instructions and Requirements Presentation to Introduce Project Requirements

Plan:

Day 1:

  • Global Seasoning Blends Worksheet- students can fill out the herbs and spices used in different cultures, countries, and regions of the world (Google Docs and PDF Version Included); Key Included

Day 2:

  • Seasoning Blends Recipes (Docs and PDF Format). Students select a spice blend from given choices and create it in the lab.

Day 3-4:

  • Students research this blend, find an appetizer recipe that uses it, and create a food order so that they can create this recipe in the lab. I have them pick a bite sized appetizer recipe to showcase their seasoning blend for ease of sharing with the class and minimizing food waste and reducing costs.

Day 5:

  • Create a Google Slides Presentation that shares with the class the specifics of your chosen spice blend including contents, history, regionality, etc. (requirements detailed in the included Slides Presentation)

Day 6-7:

  • Prepare appetizer recipes in the lab

Day 8:

  • Present recipes to class and enjoy dishes!
