Description
With these heart word practice slides, you have everything you need to teach your students how to orthographically map 280 high frequency words (sight words) using the heart word method! Aligned with UFLI Foundations and Dolch flash words.
Introducing the High Frequency Word/Heart Word Teaching Slides Bundle – a new, better approach to teaching high frequency words than traditional rote memorization methods. This method is backed by science and offers a more effective and engaging way to help students master these important words. Just like phonics skills, high frequency words need to be taught explicitly. While some high frequency words are fully decodable (example: at, am, it), many don’t fully follow phonics patterns (example: you, from). However, that doesn’t mean we can’t teach students to use those same sound-symbol relationships (phonics rules) to read high frequency words. We CAN!
The heart word method teaches students to sound out the parts of irregular words that follow traditional, regular phonics patterns. This leaves just a small part of the word that they need to learn: the heart part! Aligned with the science of reading and based on best practices, these teaching slides provide a comprehensive whole group instruction tool for high frequency word/heart word learning. They are designed to guide students through the process of acquiring and practicing heart words.
By utilizing these high frequency word/heart word teaching slides, you will save valuable time and feel confident in your ability to effectively teach your students these important words. With this comprehensive resource, you can foster strong reading skills and empower your students to become proficient readers.
Using these teaching slides, you can lead your students to:
• Say the word: Encourage students to verbalize and pronounce each high frequency word, strengthening their phonological awareness and oral reading skills. Note: The colored tiles represent the sound we would expect. The heart represents the heart part.
• Practice the word: Engage students in locating and identifying the high frequency word.
• Learn facts about the word: Provide interesting facts about the high frequency word. We dissect the word at this step.
• Tap and map the word: Incorporate kinesthetic learning by having students tap out the syllables or sounds of the high frequency word, reinforcing phonemic awareness.
• Air write the word: Encourage students to practice writing the high frequency word in the air with their fingers, reinforcing spelling patterns and muscle memory.
• Read sentences with the word: Present sentences that incorporate the high frequency word, allowing students to practice its usage in context and develop reading fluency.
