What educators are saying

I had my fifth graders partner up and read through the survival tips then choose the one they found most important then create one of their own.
I used this as a pre-reading activity and it was a great way to start off our unit with Hatchet. The students were really excited about it.

Description

Hatchet by Gary Paulsen Novel Study Unit - Wilderness Survival Guides - Hatchet Pre-Reading Activity and Final Project! In this Hatchet activity, students brainstorm survival tips, read about top ways to survive in the wilderness, and create their own illustrated survival guides!

For the Hatchet Pre-Reading section of this activity, students read a variety of wilderness survival tips, then brainstorm and write about what tip they think is most important for survival in the wild. Perfect for a pre-reading activity before getting started with your Hatchet Novel Study or Hatchet Unit, this activity really gets kids engaged and thinking about the theme of survival.

Later, students use the tips they have learned to create their own Wilderness Survival Guide Booklets, and write about the ways Brian followed (or did not follow) the survival tips. At the end of the booklet, students must analyze Brian's actions and write about whether or not he deserves a medal for following the survival tips. This activity is a great way to get students reflecting back on Brian's actions throughout the story. Completed booklets looks great hung on the classroom wall, or make great additions to a Hatchet Interactive Notebook.
