Description

This is a fun activity to complete when the students need a bit of a brain break or you need an additional day of lesson plans before starting something new or going on break. It would be a good one for the end of the year as well. I designed this during October as a brain break for students, so I called it a Halloween Haunt. This was a fun project and students were really engaged with the research and design.

While researching some surface-level details about deceased scientists, students are expected to use creativity to write an epitaph and design a headstone. Some students get all nerdy with their favorite scientist, some are really excited to design something that can be hung on the wall, and others find solace in other parts of the assignment. That could easily be edited to be more applicable to any time of year if you feel that is necessary. This takes one period and that leaves plenty of time for socialization and creativity. It could be a good sub plan also!

My students completed this assignment in one 45-minute class period from beginning to end. I allowed them to turn it in the next day if they wanted more time to finish.

Evaluate or refine a technological solution that reduces impacts of human activities on natural systems. Examples of data on the impacts of human activities could include the quantities and types of pollutants released, changes to biomass and species diversity, or areal changes in land surface use (such as for urban development, agriculture and livestock, or surface mining). Examples for limiting future impacts could range from local efforts (such as reducing, reusing, and recycling resources) to large-scale geoengineering design solutions (such as altering global temperatures by making large changes to the atmosphere or ocean).
