What educators are saying

My students loved making these for our habitat unit. They turned out super cute and makes it easier than using a shoebox to make a diorama.
My students loved this project. I used it as a project at the end of our habitat unit. It was special to see the students exprence their creativity, while still displaying knowledge of the material we spent so much learning about.

Description

Learning about biomes and animal diversity for the Second Grade Next Generation Science Standards™? Let your students design one or all 7 animal habitat diorama projects. They will love getting to illustrate/draw their very own habitat scenes for: arctic, forest, savanna, ocean, desert, pond, and rainforest.

Your prep for the pop ups is so easy.

  • Just copy the blank pop-up pattern onto tag or cardboard.
  • Print the 1/2 page pop up photos for discussion. Cut pages in half.
  • The animals can be copied on regular paper or tag. Cut the animal pages in half.
  • Copy the version(s) of "My Plan" and "My Habitat" which fit your students' needs.

Plan and Describe Activities Included

  1. "My Plan" can be used whole class or small group to discuss and brainstorm what things should be included in the habitat drawings. Three versions are included to fit the needs and level of your students.
  2. The "Habitat" writing pages give students an opportunity to write about the habitats they created. Different versions are available to meet your students' needs and levels.
  3. A blank "Habitat Report" page provides lines for your students to write their own report without sentence starters.

Worksheets guide students to PLAN and DESCRIBE their habitat diorama that contains pop up animals AND supports your NGSS science lessons. Each scene will be unique as your students will apply what they have learned in your lessons to draw the background to include the landscape, plants, climate, etc. appropriate for the habitat to provide for the animals' needs. This can be a great assessment of your students' ability to apply their knowledge about each habitat. This isn't just one craft. Your download includes animals for 7 pop up crafts.

Students will draw the environment they have learned about.

Your download includes the animals ready to be colored and added to the habitat designed and illustrated by your students. Instructions along with photos are also included showing how to cut so that the animals pop-up right out of the scene.

As each habitat is researched in your lessons, a new scene can be created by each student. Or the students can be assigned or can even choose just one setting to make after learning about many of the habitats. Make one or make all seven!

Extend your science lessons and this activity

Have the students write an informational piece about the habitat or animals depicted in the scene. Students can write about the climate, plants, and landscape that they drew into their scene. Did they research one of the animals? Have them write about predators and prey, life cycle, diet, life span, etc. Just copy the "Habitat Report" writing page included.

Tie in other areas of curriculum.

Are you working on adjectives in grammar? Let them incorporate descriptive words about the scene or animals into their text. Does this week's story focus on the sequence of events? Have them use temporal words as they write about the scene and which animal arrived first, next, then, last, etc. Let them apply what they have learned. You can just copy the "Habitat Report" writing page included for this as well.

Draw in one environment for your entire class:

If you want one scene for all of your students to color, you can draw in your desired habitat scene onto the blank pop-up page before you copy it for your students. This works for younger students if your goal is to just have them color a habitat. Then let them add the animals to finish the pop up. Anything is possible.

Enjoy watching your students get creative as they use the knowledge they have learned to draw the scenes for these pop ups.

Add more engaging activities to your habitat unit.
