Description

Holes learners will enjoy this Google Drive pre-reading activity that gets thinking about and discussing (and maybe even engaging in some friendly arguing!). Then after the novel is done, learners will revisit these questions to consider how their minds have stayed the same or changed based on the events, characters, and themes they've just read about and felt.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY IMPLEMENTATION

Learners are challenged with nine controversial statements that are created to divide the learners into two sides. We like to go question by question and have learners physically separate to different sides of the classroom. "If you agree, come to this side . . . If you disagree, come to this side. Try not to be a maybe or I don't know." Then we have learners on both sides express their opinions, while the teacher offers challenging-yet-respectful questions back to each speaker. As learners move through the statements, they'll be activating prior knowledge about the deeper issues in the story, while practicing their polite argument skills and getting emotionally connected to the story's ideas.

INCLUDED:

* Google Drive Activity for students to sort through their biases.

WHAT OTHER TEACHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT THIS PRE-READING RESOURCE

♥ Thanks so much! Great pre-reading activity to get the kids talking. I cannot tell you enough what I and my students got out of this. I showed the PPT and split the questions into two days. I made a worksheet with the title, question number and then Agree or Disagree. The students circled their opinion. For each question I had the kids go to one side of the room if they agreed, the other if they disagreed, and to the front of the room if they didn't have a clue or they saw both sides. All were required to support their choice. I reiterated how smart they will be when their next year's teachers see they know how to support their answers. The depth that I got was amazing! These are spec ed. kids who have trouble answering in writing but had no problem orally. I wish I had filmed it. I can't wait to go back after the book and revisit their answers. Truly an excellent activity!

♥ Great resource to help the get the students thinking about the book and also get excited about the storyline. I loved this so much that I bought the whole bundle later! This is such a good way to get students to own their thoughts, feelings, and biases. They come to the realization that "equal" isn't always fair or best. It kind of blew their minds!

My admin did a random walk through while we were discussing the questions and were blown away with the level of engagement they saw. My students absolutely LOVED doing this activity before reading, and it sparked a full period of excellent conversation and debate. Thank you!

♥ This is such a great resource! It really got my students thinking. I had my students answer each statement, then we discussed them individually. The whole class discussion was exciting, and even more so after we finished the book and went back to reflect. Students were amazed at how their perspectives had changed! Highly recommended for anyone reading novels with their class!

♥ When I had my learners do this, I was unsure how it would turn out. I am about to complete our novel and yesterday I reminded them of this pre- read project they did. They all gasped, most can't remember what their answers were. I am so excited to see the post answers. Now that it is coming full circle....YES....this way a great way to start the novel!! Text to self is a BIG eye opener this resource just made them have the lightbulb go on with!
